Bearing Families: Identification and Comparison
Begin by identifying the bearing family and full marking. Similar dimensions do not make different bearing families interchangeable.
| Family | What to check |
|---|---|
| Angular Contact Ball Bearings | Contact angle, single or double row, matched arrangement, preload or clearance, cage and accuracy class. |
| Self-Aligning Ball Bearings | Bore type, adapter sleeve if applicable, clearance, closures and permissible misalignment. |
| Cylindrical Roller Bearings | Full N, NU, NJ or NUP type designation, flange arrangement, cage, clearance and locating role. |
| Spherical Roller Bearings | Cylindrical or tapered bore, internal clearance, cage, relubrication features and mounting method. |
| Tapered Roller Bearings | Complete cup and cone or assembly numbers, total width, contact arrangement and specified setting. |
| Thrust Ball Bearings | Single or double direction, shaft and housing washer dimensions, total height and axial load requirements. |

How to compare safely
Use the exact manufacturer variant for engineering specifications. Compare load direction, locating function, closure, clearance, cage, tolerances and lubrication before considering replacement. A dimension match alone does not establish suitability.
